Personnel
Update:
Bill Lonergan has
volunteered to replace Len Porter as Club Secretary. Time pressures
associated with building a new home have forced Clarence Linder
to resign as Community Service Committee Chair and Board member. Mark Gasparovic will replace Clarence in both
positions. President Steve announced he
is appointing the Reverends Robert Youmans and Garry Morrow as Assistant
Chaplains and the Most Reverend Reverend Daniel Stec as Chaplain.
These men of the “cloth” have
volunteered to share responsibility for our weekly invocation. Finally, Keith Clement has agreed to assume
the role of Club Historian. The Club is
more than fortunate to have so many members willingly assume responsibility for
important tasks.
Junior
Volleyballers Describe Their Experience:
Several months ago the Club responded to a request for financial
assistance from a local junior volleyball group to help underwrite its
participation in a national tournament in Texas. On October 5
four of their team members and one of their parent advisors thanked our Club
for its support and described the benefits of their participation. 48 teams from all over the United States participated in the junior bracket. The Burnt Hills team made it to the quarter
finals before being eliminated. Players
Michael Bynon, Sam Guba, Andrew Slocum, and Luke Farrell reported on their
experiences, including the first time any of them had been on an airplane. Parent Advisor Pete Farrell said the group
raised $6,000 to make the trip possible.
All expressed gratitude for Rotary’s willingness to support an activity
from which the boys gained a great deal and will remember the rest of their
lives.
Board of Directors Meeting Report
Use
of Uncommitted Reserve Funds:
President Steve reported at the October 5 meeting that
the Board of Directors decided at its meeting earlier that day to recommend to
the members for their approval that $3,000 be taken from the Club’s
uncommitted reserve funds to finance a major project(s) during the current
fiscal year. The membership approved
this recommendation by a show of hands.
Members were urged to submit their recommendations for projects in
writing to Rey Whetton or Linda LeTendre
News Briefs
Porter Appreciation:
Both
Len and Sue Porter were presented by President Steve with framed certificates,
specially designed by Gini Whetton, to commemorate two decades of special
service to the Club: Len for his
conscientious work as Club Secretary and Sue for her forbearance in tolerating
the “clutter” in her otherwise neat home of the records material associated
with a secretary’s work. Len also
received a Cross pen and pencil set in recognition of his service over the
years.
Membership
Activity:
Gini Whetton
was inducted as a new member by Membership Chair Ron and President Steve. Ron indicated that Gini has already made
significant contributions to the Club with her design work for the Membership
Committee and the Rotateller. Gini has a
varied background in education, ski instruction, work
with art and fundraising at the Schenectady
Museum,
and most recently in public relations design that makes her selection of a
Rotary classification a challenge.
Unfortunately, the Club is losing a
valued member in former Treasurer Sandy Lannon. Her work location and her
employer’s preference that she join Guilderland’s Club
have led to her decision to transfer her Rotary membership to Guilderland.
Club Meeting Sites:
The club is
meeting at the Methodist
Church
the first two Tuesdays of each month with the remainder of the meetings for the
month at the Old Homestead. This
schedule will apply during the 2004-05 year except when a special event (ie. the
Apple Pie festival on November 2 or the Christmas Party on December 14th) is
scheduled.
Fund Raiser Season:
The 10th annual Rotary
Apple Run is scheduled for Saturday morning, October 16, Club members have
signed up with event chair Paul Lewandowski to assist with a host of administrative details and monitor road safety. Entrants are still welcome at the Middle
School prior to the beginning of the 9 a.m. race. On Election Day the Club will conduct the
annual Apple Pie Festival under the leadership of Co-Chairs Lynn Rafalik and
Ron Serapilio. It is a popular event
that brings the community together for an evening of fellowship. Again, each of us needs to publicize the Festival
and sell tickets to our friends and neighbors.
Finally, the sale of Entertainment ’05 books has been ongoing and is to
be concluded by November 1. There are very few books available from the original order. If you don’t think you can sell all of the
books you have now, please return them so they can be redistributed to others
who want them. If they are needed, we can order more books.
