Shelter Box USA Addresses Disaster Needs

Beth Palmer, Executive Director of Shelter Box USA, reported at the 8/31 meeting how the Lakewood Ranch Rotary Club, where she is currently a member and a Paul Harris Fellow, became the American affiliate for Shelter Box, a program that originated in the United Kingdom.  Shelter Box is a local club program, not an RI program, and has spread since it began in 2000 to Rotary clubs in Canada, Australia, Japan, and the US.  Shelter Box distributes its “boxes” directly to people, not governments.  Where relief agencies understandably focus on food and medicine when natural or man-made disasters strike, Shelter Box focuses on providing critical shelter and warmth to the victims.  Each ”box” contains a high quality 10-person tent, 10 sleeping bags, at least a 6 month supply of water purification tablets, and a variety of other items.  To date, over 18,000 victims have been sheltered.  Decisions on where to send the boxes are based on input from relief agencies like the Red Cross.  The boxes presently have an all-inclusive cost of $720 each.  Ms. Palmer visits clubs like ours regularly to inform Rotarians about Shelter Box in the hope that more local Rotary clubs will sponsor this worthy humanitarian effort.
