Bagpipe Performance and Presentation:

It’s a rare occasion when the program precedes dinner at a Rotary meeting, but  such  was the case on 9/7 when Mary McSwegan White presented a mini-concert on her bagpipes.

Reverend White, pastor of the St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Albany, explained that you can’t play bagpipes after dinner because you can’t generate sufficient breath on a full stomach to produce an appropriate sound.  Following her musical demonstration, Rev. White identified the various parts of her instrument and described how bagpipes work.  She was dressed traditionally in a kilt/skirt, almost knee-length white stockings, a white blouse, and a necktie.  She noted that pipes are played all over the world because the English army, including its Scottish pipers, traveled almost everywhere.  Pipers often play by ear, but must memorize written music when they do not.  The cost of a set of bagpipes ranges from several hundreds of dollars to many thousands, largely depending on decoration.  Rev. White began to play the pipes at 16 and got her first instrument at 18.  She said it  was the challenge of mastering a difficult instrument that attracted her to the bagpipe.  Both her music and presentation were enjoyed by all present.

Club Service Committee Chair Val Mosier announced the local business recipients of  Town in Bloom Beautification Awards.  Dino’s Pizzeria won the award for Burnt Hills; Charlton Furniture Store for Charlton; and Carney’s for Ballston Lake.  The September 2nd “Burnt Hills Spotlight” carried a full story about the awards.

Club Meeting Sites:

The Board of Directors has agreed that starting in October the first two Tuesdays of the month club meetings will be at the Methodist Church and the remainder of the meetings for the month will be at the Old Homestead.

Website Revision:

Ken Crotty has upgraded the club website with new information and additional features, including links to District 7190, RI, and town governments.  The Rotateller will be available each week for absentees.  Give it a try at  www.bhblrotary.org.

“Entertainment ‘05” Sale Continues:

The annual Entertainment Book fundraiser continues.  All but 10 books from the original order of 70 have been distributed to members to sell.  We can order more if needed.  Our goal is to earn at least as much as the $700 the Club made on last year’s sale.  The price is unchanged at $40 per book, and the book can be used at once.  Those members who want books to sell can obtain them from Dick O’Rourke at a Tuesday meeting.

Golf and Bocce Tournament Postponed:

The golf and bocce tournament scheduled for September 9  was postponed because heavy rains from the Florida hurricane were expected.  The tournament has been rescheduled for Thursday, September 23.  Rescheduling is a complicated business and time is short, so the Gift of Life sponsors are assuming that everyone who was registered for the 9th will be playing on the rescheduled date, the 23rd.  If you must cancel, please contact Steve Caine, who will inform the tournament chair.
