Walter Kessler Remembered
August
10 was an evening to remember Walter Kessler, deceased Burnt Hills Rotarian and
former District 7190 Governor. Five
Kessler family members were present, and three became Paul Harris Fellows
during the program. Club members Stan
Garrison and Bill McClary and former member
Chuck McLaughlin, spoke of their memories of Walter and how he had touched
their lives. As a Rotarian, Rev. Kessler
had often donated funds to Rotary to sponsor Paul Harris Fellowships. In his memory, his son Don sponsored his
brother, Charles; his sister, Joanna Publow, and her
husband, David Publow, as new Paul Harris
Fellows. District Governor Blair Hartman
read the citation and presented Paul Harris pins to each of the three. Both Don and Charles Kessler thanked the Club
for honoring their father and making the evening such a memorable one for their
family.
President’s Corner: Service Above Self
I think it is
helpful to occasionally reflect on what makes Rotary so unique, why we are
proud to be a part of it and what we get out of being a member. We all have individual reasons for why we
joined Rotary, and why we stay in it.
All of them are valid and good reasons, be it fellowship, networking,
continued learning, or anything else.
But in the end, we all
have one common human motivation that strikes a chord, deep down,
and that is service. All of us have been
around long enough to know what really counts, and what gives meaning to how we
conduct our daily lives. We undoubtedly
would all agree that some of the most rewarding things we can do in life are
conscious acts of doing something for others or standing up for a cause that is
larger than oneself. Rotary gives us a
wonderful avenue for service and a way to help others. There are an infinite number of ways you can
help -- some are highly visible, some people may not even notice, except you.
All are important! Our club needs a
strong bond between its members, we need to have fun, we need enthusiasm, we
need interesting meetings, we need to have a well organized and run
organization, we need new members, we need to educate ourselves on what Rotary
is and can do, we need ideas and vision, we need outreach to our community, and
we need to make the best use of our many talents and resources to do the most
good. Certainly, each and every one of
us can help meet these needs in some fashion.
It is service that makes us unique, it is service that rightfully should
make us proud of our organization, and it is service that gives us the greatest
rewards. ... What a wonderful
opportunity we have been given -- Service Above Self.
Cheers!
Steve
MEMBERSHIP - Building for Our
Future
It has been said that every person
knows at least two hundred people. By inviting friends to attend a Rotary
dinner meeting, regardless of whether they themselves might become Rotarians,
we expand the message of Rotary and the possibility of reaching other
interested individuals through them. As we strive to serve as a team, we are
reminded that we must also build for our own club a future by sharing the
Rotary opportunity with others. In doing this, we ask that all members please
complete the two steps below, and your membership team will do the rest .
Step 1:
Personally invite someone to a meeting. Try the same approach that led
you to join.
Step 2:
Please try using a complimentary guest dinner card (Discussed at the
August 17 meeting). An RSVP will be needed for accurate dinner counts.
Thank you very much!
