     Len Stepping Down

For those who  were not  with us September 28, Len Porter, after 20 years of loyal service, announced to the Board that he needed to step down as Club Secretary.  When the resignation was announced  to the membership, the club rightly expressed with a standing ovation its appreciation to Len for all he has done.  Twenty years of service as secretary is probably unprecedented in Rotary, and few, if any, will top that performance in the future.  The most prominent feelings are gratitude and appreciation. It was a heck of a run.  Fortunately, Len will be staying with the club.

                                                        Club Assembly

The Club assembly was led by President Steve and addressed two topics: the use of uncommitted reserve dollars and the Rotary Foundation.  Although the uncommitted reserve was a major topic of discussion at the Board meeting preceding the assembly, Steve indicated that there were remaining issues to discuss and no conclusion was reached by the Board at this time on a plan to be presented to the membership.

Garry Morrow then provided information about the Rotary Foundation, a not-for-profit corporation whose mission is to support the efforts of  Rotary International in fulfillment of the Object of Rotary, the achievement of world understanding and peace through local, national, and international humanitarian, educational, and cultural programs.   Next Bob Rasmussen, a professional financial planner, provided his analysis of the Rotary Foundation.  Bob said the Foundation is of Rotary International but is an independent body that administers $110 million in grants annually.  He said the Foundation is a “tightly focused” organization, which it must be to get anything done.  Every local project that seeks matching funds must be approved by the District.  The local club must provide time, money, and leadership.

Steve asked four (Clarence Linder, Linda LeTendre, Dick O’Rourke, and Bob Youmans) of the present Paul Harris Fellows in the Club to comment briefly about  how they became PHFs and what the experience meant to them.  A common thread in these comments was that each had been beneficiaries of the Rotary Foundation contributions of fellow Club members in accruing the $1,000 total needed to become a Paul Harris Fellow.  Steve used the motto “Every Rotarian, Every Year” to express Rotary’s and his goal  for Club participation in Rotary Foundation.  He seeks a goal of $100 per person times the 42 members in our club.  Since this is a voluntary program, not everyone may give or give the same amount.  Some could contribute more and some less according to their circumstances.  If the Club or an individual matches a contribution at a minimum level of $50, District 7190 will match it equally.   Contributors can identify themselves or others as the individual to be credited for Paul Harris Fellow eligibility.  The Club will need to develop a procedure for identifying the recipients of contributions that are not specified for any one member.  The form used in making contributions to Rotary Foundation can be found on the Club website.  It was agreed that those contributing should give the completed form and a check made out to The Rotary Foundation to Treasurer Ken Crotty. Steve will answer any question you may have about contributing to the Rotary Foundation.
