Mike Brewster was inducted into club membership by Membership Committee Chairman and President Nominee Chris Nyhan.  Mike is the owner and operator of Gil’s Garage, a community icon since its establishment by Mike’s father over 40 years ago.  In welcoming Mike to the club, President Ron remarked that Gil’s Garage is noted for its fine reputation and high ethical standards. Mike grew up in BH-BL and has been involved with Gil’s ever since he attended technical school in Michigan.  He currently lives on Charlton Road with his wife, Doreen.  The Brewster family also includes twin daughters and a son.

Amanda Seymour was introduced by Garry Morrow as a young professional representing our club in District 7190’s upcoming Group Study Exchange with District 1910 in Eastern Europe. Each district sends a team of four young professionals and a Rotary leader for a month long stay in the host district.  The District 1910 team will be visiting us in May.  Amanda is a University of Nebraska social services graduate.  She was recommended for GSE by Linda LeTendre for whom she is presently working as a case manager; Amanda indicated that she hopes to learn something new about case management for the developmentally disabled from her experience in Austria, Slovenia, Croatia and Bosnia/Herzegovina.  A Group Study Exchange is organized between two Rotary districts in different Countries. The visits are typically organized into four one week segments in different locales within the host district with all transportation, lodging and meals provided by the host.  At the close of Amanda’s remarks, Garry, who heads up District 7190’s GSE activity, gave Amanda a supply of BH-BL Rotary banners to distribute to the clubs she will visit during the exchange.

Text Box: The Evening’s Announcements & Reminiscences

President Ron announced that the District 7190 Conference

scheduled for May 16-19, 2008 at Jiminy Peak Resort has been cancelled.

Walter Grattidge announced a “Rotary Conversation with Jim Connolly, Ellis Hospital CEO & President”, will be held on Tuesday, April 22, from 7:30-9 a.m. in the Ellis Hospital Dining Rooms.  Ellis is asking Rotarians and others in the community to share their opinions about health care needs and what matters most to you and your family as the Hospital plans the restructuring of hospital care in Schenectady.  Ellis asks those who plan to attend to RSVP by Friday, April 18, to Christina at 243-4600 or via e-mail to bushc@ellishospital.org

Community Service Chair Bob Youmans reported that four Rotarians (Chris Nyhan, Bob Rasmussen, Harold Townley, and Bob Youmans) had painted two children’s bedrooms last Saturday in a trailer park home for a mother in poor health.  The project was part of a committee effort to expand community service beyond our customary month-long

Spring projects.  Bob said three projects were being considered for May-June, 2008: Cloverpatch construction, an Alplaus Creek clean-up, and a window project at Council Meadows with the Boy Scouts of America.

Steve Caine indicated the plans for upgrading our storage facilities were making good progress with an action-oriented Harold Townley leading the way.

With Linda LeTendre acting as moderator, a spirited trip down Rotary Memory Lane concluded the meeting.  Among the reminiscences were the following:   Building bridges at Cloverpatch (Ken ); A child transplant recipient thanking Rotarians for a Gift of Life at the golf outing (Steve); Being fined for not wearing panty hose to a club meeting (Bob Y.);  Mary Wolfe’s 90th birthday and the foundation work for a ramp over the creek at Cloverpatch (Bill M.); A Bugs Bunny doll being carried into the WMHT auction by the “crotch” by a volunteer (Linda); Being hit on the back with a pie thrown by Chuck McLaughlin because he disparaged the yellow paint used in a Rotary project (Len).  A Jack Wolfe presentation on his “bobbing bird” (Paul).
