The Lakeside Boys Volleyball Team, known variously as “The Beach Bums” or “Lakeside Wolverines” are a group of Burnt Hills – Ballston Lake Student Athletes competing in the 15 and under class where they are the 2006 East Coast Champions. Three of their players were introduced by Coach Melissa Armstrong and assistant coach Tom Houghtalen. They were Jordan Armstrong, Alex Houghtalen and Tyler Slocum. The boys spoke of their experiences in competition against other select teams that draw on several schools in larger areas and recruit taller players than Lakeside. They are almost always cast as underdogs and have enjoyed surprising success as evidenced by their title performance in 2006. They are currently ranked number two on the East Coast.
All of the boys also participate in two or more school sports and are strong academically. Most are honor students. They also contribute to the community in a number of volunteer activities including assisting with youth volleyball tournaments.
The team competes nationwide and has attracted the attention of college coaches. Four players were selected to attend the Team USA High Performance Camp last year. Four more will work out with the national team at Olympic training headquarters in California this year. Last week the team won their divisional Championship in Pennsylvania. The next big trips are to the East Coast tourney on Memorial Day weekend and to the national tournament in Atlanta on July 4th weekend. The team is actively raising funds to defray travel expenses.
The
team closed their presentation with an inspirational video. Ron Serapilio presented a check for $100 from
the club and offered to collaborate on other fund raising opportunities,
perhaps by networking with other Clubs.
