“Veterinary Tails” a Must Read
By the time this Rotateller is published most BH-BL Rotarians will have read “Burnt Hills Veterinary Tails”, an account of “the life and legacy of Stan ‘Doc’ and Shirley Garrison”, written by Penny Heritage with love and an appreciation for the importance of preserving local history. “Tails” made its debut at the 11/1 meeting and was an immediate hit as those present scrambled to obtain a Stan-autographed copy following remarks by President Rey, Stan, Steve Caine, and Penny.
The back cover characterizes the book as: “Often moving, often humorous, always extraordinary, this collection is a sensitive, delightful and engaging insider’s look into the world of a country vet”. This reporter could not agree more with this assessment. “Tails” captures the essence of Stan and Shirley as we know them and provides details not available elsewhere about the people who built the BH-BL community we enjoy today. Every Rotarian will love this book. Get one today if you haven’t already.
“Tails”
was first made available to the general public at the Apple Pie Festival and at
several other community sites last week. Copies will be for sale at the
Charlton Historical Society’s District 8 Schoolhouse on
Announcements
• Ken Crotty, Mark Gasparovic, Ade Osunmo, Ron
Serapilio, and Bob Youmans used 2880 lbs. of concrete in completing the
Cloverpatch bridge project that had been delayed several times by inclement
weather.
• A number of Rotarians participated in the CHS Counts
inventory at the Burnt Hills Hardware organized by Shirley and Bill
McClary. The hardware store donates to
CHS an amount commensurate with the cost of the inventory if it had not been
done by volunteers.
The Apple
Pie Festival again last week drew a large crowd that enjoyed the appetizing
dessert, but even more importantly, a rare opportunity to visit with friends
and neighbors. The key to the success of this continuing
venture is in the careful preparation and hard work of its planners and the
team effort of the total membership. For
example, APF Chair Ron Serapilio and his PR sidekick, Gini Whetten, produced
the following publicity materials which were distributed throughout Burnt Hills
and surrounding towns:
40 very large color posters (17'
x 11"), 12 of which placed at polling places
30 smaller color posters
(8.5 x 11)
800
color posters, half page size
1500
black ink on bright yellow paper posters 1/3 page size
180 1/3
page size for sack stuffers for the Apple Run
6 large road signs placed around the community Nov. 8
2556 GRAND TOTAL Table cards
for festival night and follow-up thank you cards for our generous donors were also
designed and printed.
In
addition, Ron contacted radio stations, newspapers and any other media he could
think of. He and other members of the
Apple Pie Festival committee obtained the door prizes from community merchants;
obtained the apples, pies, cheese, ice cream, cider, coffee, etc.; managed the
set up of the tables; arranged for the
entertainment, etc. Result – 425 friends
and neighbors attended the Apple Pie Festival this year! Good things just don’t
happen. They result from careful
preparation and hard work.
Congratulations to Ron and his many helpers!
