BHBL Rotary Thursday Golf    More Fun for less $$$$$$$$

This reporter is happy to inform that a growing number of club members are joining the ranks of Thursday morning golf at the Galway Golf Course on Jockey Street, North of Route 67.  We’re now starting at 8:30am. The more Rotarians participating, the better. Bringing a guest might help get new mem-bers for our club.

Early this summer, three of our members started getting together on Thursday morning for nine holes of golf. It’s been such a pleasant experience, our numbers have been growing.  A round takes one and one half to two hours to complete. The course is a wide open with no bunkers and a few water hazards.  There are three par four holes and the others are par three. Those 62 and older pay $9. Anyone under, deserves to pay more. I think it is $10 or $11. We end the session normally sipping some lemonade.

Last Thursday we had the best showing yet, with two threesomes. It was also rumored that Earl “The Pearl” was out on the course with Chuck McLaughlin. Playing last week were “Slam’n” Paul Lewandowski, “On the green in one” Youmans, “Money bags” Crotty, “Smooth Stroke” Morrow, “Birdie” Anderson and “+Velocity but ? direction” Caine. It’s been a lot of fun. You don’t loose too many balls. And, you get to spend some time with great Rotarians.

All are welcome  --  just show up!!!

News Briefs

Visiting Rotarian Don Kessler gave a wonderful Invocation.  It was agreed that Happy Dollars would go to a Putting Contest during the Gift of Life Golf Tournament.  Ron Serapillio presented an outstanding Minute for Rotary.

He shared an article from Rotary Magazine on the Seven Habits of Highly Successful Rotarians.  They are:

1.       Consistent Attendance

2.       A high regard for fellowship

3.       Respect for all vocations and avocations

4.       Discipline for carrying out worthy enterprises

5.       A balanced use of time, money and energy

6.       Being more empathetic

7.       Always remember that we want a positive face for Rotary in the Community.

Garry Morrow provided an update on the Gift of Life Golf Tournament.

We still can use more golf players. If you want to participate, contact Garry.  Ron and Gini are our two Bocci players and we need more.

Please volunteer. You’ll have a lot of fun. Contact Ron if you want to play.  Paul Lewandowski passed out posters for the Oct 22 Apple Run. Gini

asked those who have not provided her their spouse’s or significant others name for the Rotary database to please do so.

Thoroughbred Breeding in NY State

Dennis Brad, Executive Director of the NY State Breeding Assoc. gave

a very interesting presentation on the nature and significant growth of NYS’s thoroughbred breeding industry. He described how through the 1973 creation

of the State Breeding and Development Fund, NY has become the fourth lead-

ing state for breeding in the US. The state has gone from less than 200 horse farms to over 400.  Most are converted dairy farms. The Breeding Association

has gone from 350 members to 1,050 members.

The Breeding and Development Fund is the basis of an incentive pro-gram to encourage thoroughbred breeding in NY State. A .7% tax is levied on

all wagers at Aqueduct, Belmont, Saratoga, and Finger Lakes race tracks, and garners $14-$15 million per year. The money is used to award breeders for NY

State born foal that are winners in NYS horse races. If the foal of a NY State

born mare wins in NY, the breeder will be awarded from the Breeding and Development Fund, 20% of the purse. If a breeder buys a mare from out of

state, and it drops a foal in NY State that subsequently wins NY State races

the breeder is awarded 10%. There is also a program for NY State stallions.

In the case of a foal of a NY State stallion winning a race in NY, the stallion

owner gets 8% of the purse from the fund.

Dennis concluded his program by giving President Rey a beautiful print

of Funny Cide. It will be raffled-off at the Apple Pie Fest. Hats and book-bags donated by Dennis were auctioned off at the meeting and an additional $120

was raised for Gift of Life.
