Meeting of August 23, 2005

President Rey opened the meeting with several announcements and shared with us a very moving thank you note from Andrew Markham whom we sponsored for RYLA.  He then introduced Sandra Kominoski who gave her ”introduction to Rotary” talk which was wonderfully illustrated with slides.  Sandra has certainly raised the bar for these introductory talks!

We learned that she is a third generation sled dog trainer / driver hailing from Saranac Lake where the weather is certainly conducive to such activities for a great part of the year.  We also learned that sled dog racing is a family activity that teaches responsibility, self reliance and compassion (for the dogs) at an early age.  There was clearly a lot of family fun evident in the photos which included the Kominoski children along with friends who were also sledders at various meets.

Sandra concluded with some remarks about her childhood and her parents of whom she is obviously very proud.

August 23, 2005 Program:  Club Assembly

The program for this meeting was a club assembly where the various committees meet to review progress toward our stated goals and objectives for the rotary year.  The highlights of the committee deliberations are set forth below along with an appeal from the membership committee.

The Community Service Committee discussed how best to apply the approx $2000 from last year’s budget that was not spent. (Actually this was revenue surplus from all our fundraising events)

Possible ideas were:

1.       Purchase 1 or 2 generators and donate them to local fire company.

2.       The group felt that the local fire companies are well funded and

our investment would do more good in other places.

3.       Purchase picnic tables for Elmer Smith and Jenkins parks.  The group

felt that tables and benches were good ideas we should budget for

       next spring.

4.       Increase the money donation to the CHS van.  The group felt this would

be the best choice.  We already donated $3000 and Glenville added an additional $1000.  Our added donation would bring the total to $6000. President Rey is applying for a matching grant.  If the grant is approved,

we will have at least $12,000 toward the vehicle. The estimated cost for

a wheelchair hoist van is $17,000.  Also the van will have a ROTARY logo identifying the donor clubs.

5.       Therefore the Community Service Committee recommends to the Board

that our club donate the surplus money to the CHS van.

The international Service Committee has recommended a new project for

this year called the Water Buffalo Bank that helps a Pakistani Village to create

a sustainable way of life for its citizens.  This is a matching grant program and president Rey has submitted our letter of commitment for use in raising the matching funds.  We are working with the Glenville Rotary on this.  They are teamed in turn with a club in Pakistan.   We also have a goal of increasing our participation in the Gift of life fund raiser (September 15) from $1500 to over $2000 by fielding more golf and Bocce teams.  This will also push our fun

 budget to record levels.

Membership chair, Ron Serapilio, contributes the following as inspiration

for all of us:

“Rotary – a gift to be shared, not a product to be sold…”

“Because August is Membership and Extension Month, please invite someone

to Rotary. The fact that membership in Rotary is by invitation only means that the                   survival of our club depends on members sharing the gift of Rotary with others.”

“Please take a moment to think about how you were introduced to Rotary. Who invited you to your first Rotary meeting? Who invited you to join our club?

It's probably fair to say, considering all you've gained through your membership

in Rotary, that you appreciate the person who first invited you to our club. If it hadn't been for that person's kind invitation, you might not have had the enriching opportunities that you’ve had as a Rotarian.”

The membership Committee has decided to offer (small) prizes to:
a.) the person who gives all 10 of his/her business cards away first –[ to

qualified persons and for a good reason], and b.) to the person who uses

up his 2 dinner invitation cards first, bringing two new people [a couple counts

as one] to a Rotary dinner meeting. (See Gini if you don’t have your cards yet.)
