August 16, 2005 Program:
Electric Model Airplanes
The program was presented
by John Maggs and his associates Howie
Cummings, Al Mostek and Jim Wittis,
all of the Electric Power Aeromodelers Club.
Their airplanes and their performance was a revelation to your reporter whose
experience in the field has been limited to balsa wood, tissue paper and
rubber-band motors.
John informed us all the planes are electrically
powered, with no gasoline engines. One
advantage is no change in weight and balance during flight as fuel is
consumed.
Another is that the power plants are clean and the models do not need to be
cleaned up after use. The planes are
remarkably quiet compared to gasoline.
The power source is a DC
battery. The lithium-polymer type offers
the most efficient energy storage vs. weight.
The less-expensive nickel-metal-hydride type is
also
used. DC is converted to AC in a Speed
Control device before going to an Outrunner Motor
which offers a 40% efficiency gain over the conventional arrange-
ment of fixed stator with rotating shaft. A speed reduction device is used between motor
and propeller.
We were given an impressive
demonstration of the models capabilities and the club members’ flying skills:
rapid takeoff from the tennis court, intricate aerobatics, high altitudes,
landing at the pilot’s feet like a retrieving dog (and an occasional landing
in a soft
tree! Linda LeTendre was heard calling
for a medic on occasion). The flying
pizza, visible in the photo below was a peoples’ favorite.
More information on electric model airplanes is
available from Competition Hobby Supplies in
The club extends its thanks to John and his team for
the program and demonstration.
