Club Celebration of Rotary’s Centennial  Anniversary

President Steve announced plans for the Club to celebrate Rotary’s 100th anniversary with dinner in the Schenectady County Community College dining room.  Each year dinner prepared by SCCC’s Culinary Arts Department is a special occasion, and it will be more so this year as we celebrate our centennial anniversary and partake of a special birthday cake.  Fred Garvin, who has written a book about the subject, will speak to us about the history of Rotary, including District 7190 and our own club.  Another highlight will be the induction of another new club member.  Dinner will be $17.50 per person and spouses are invited.  Sign up now, if you have not already done so.

News Briefs:

Donate Old Eyeglasses to Peruvian Children

Laura Linder asks Club members to bring any eyeglasses they are no longer using to our next meeting.  The Rotary Club of Schenectady, Laura’s former club, has embarked on a project through RI’s World Community Services Project Exchange to collect eyeglasses for impoverished children in El Rimac, Peru.  El Rimac Rotarians are overseeing the project, which will include oversight of project finances, a public education campaign, and optometric screenings for 500 low-income patients.

BH-BL Nurses Express Appreciation:

BH-BL school district nurses Kathy Greco (Charlton Hts.) and Donna Fredericks (Senior High) came to the February 1 club meeting to express in person appreciation for the Club’s $1800 contribution to the holiday fund for needy children administered district-wide by the school nurses.  Kathy and Donna applauded the Club’s effort and provided insight into how the money is distributed in cooperation with a network of community churches.

CHS Counts Earns $500

Shirley and Bill McClary announce that Burnt Hills Hardware has donated $500 to Community Human Services as a result of community participation in the store’s year-end inventory.  A considerable number of Rotarians take part in this activity each year.

Semi-annual Dues

As of January 25 eighteen members had not yet paid their semi-annual Club dues. Please give your remittance to Club Secretary Bill Lonergan as soon as you can.

Report from the 1/25/05 Board Meeting

President-Elect Rey reported on the Board’s 1/25 meeting to the membership on January 25.

  •   The Board approved a $600 donation to Community Human Services consistent with past practice.

  •   When Rotary Foundation donors authorize the Club to apply the donation points accruing from their donation to another member, the Board will determine the recipient(s) and match the donation points.

  •   The membership will have to make a decision soon on whether or not to continue the status quo in regard to the Club’s meeting place or  to make a change for next year.  In the  informal discussion at the 1/25 meeting, the membership was about evenly split between maintaining the status quo if  the church volunteers wished to continue or making a change to hold all meetings at the Olde Homestead.

  •   Contributions for  tsunami relief in the short term should be an individual decision rather than a Club donation.

    •   After reviewing the numerous worthy suggestions from the membership on the charity to be designated as the recipient of a $3,000 gift from the Club, the Board voted to present three options to for decision by the membership on February 8:  a Wellness Express van for Community Human Services (CHS), the CLASP scholarship fund for Charlton School graduates, or a Rotary Foundation water project in a third world country (RF would match our gift).
