Board of Directors Notes:

Every Rotarian, Every Year Program:

The Board of Directors has agreed to work toward a goal of $4,200, an average of $100 per club member, in contributions in support of the Rotary Foundation’s “Every Rotarian, Every Year” initiative.  In 2000-03 the Rotary Foundation received contributions totaling US$133 million and spent $94 million in support of humanitarian and educational programs implemented by clubs and districts.  Contributions from Rotarians go into one of two funds:  Annual Awards Fund, which provides grants and awards through Foundation programs, and Permanent Fund, an endowment from which only the earnings are spent in support of Foundation programs, ensuring the long-time viability of the Foundation.

President Steve emphasized again that this was a voluntary program, but that he hoped when taken as a whole, our club would do its best to reach this goal.  Not everyone may be able to give and not everyone can give the same amount.  Checks made out  to “The Rotary Foundation” should be given to Club Treasurer Ken Crotty along with the Contribution Form that can be found on the Club website.  Only contributions to the Foundations Annual Awards Fund will garner Paul Harris Fellowship credit..  Steve will ask three senior members who have contributed significantly to the Foundation in the past to form a committee to advise the Board on how to apportion Foundation contributions that are not directed or tied to anyone specifically.

Apple Pie Festival Tickets:

The Board feels that energizing advanced Apple Pie ticket sales could raise more money to help to support  the Rotary’s many good works in the community, such as TIB, youth scholarships, assistance to needy families, youth activities like the junior volley ball program, etc..  Tickets for the Election Day Rotary Apple Pie Festival at the Senior High School are now available from Co-Chairs Lynn Rafalik and Ron Serapilio for sale to community residents and friends at $5 per adult and $4 each for children.  President Steve advises that we should stress to community members that they are buying more than a good time and appetizing food; a $5 dollar ticket purchase contributes to efforts to better community life. Steve hopes that all members will turn in their ticket receipts and unsold tickets no later than the evening of the event.

First in Fun:
Our golfers and bocce players achieved great  success in the recent Rotary Gift of Life golf and bocce tournaments, according to team captains Garry Morrow and Ron Serapilio.  Although the two captains did not  substantiate team member observations that “we were undefeated” or “we finished three under par”, they did strongly assert that both teams were clearly “first in fun The most important accomplishment, however, was that  our participants raised $1400 for the Gift of Life.  Garry distributed copies of a Gazette news story headlined “It’s a Miracle” and describing how a 13-year old Dominican boy had life-saving surgery on his heart under the auspices of Gift of Life at Albany Med just days after his step-father had undergone emergency heart surgery following a heart attack.  That’s what the Gift of Life and its fundraising tournament are all about.

Save the Date:
The annual Rotary Foundation Dinner will be held on Friday, November 12th at the Marriott Hotel in Albany.  We have been promised “great food, good fellowship and plenty of chances to win a small fortune.”  Add to this the fact that  some terrific entertainment is planned and all attendees will also have the opportunity  to share in the good works of the Rotary Foundation.  Mark your calendar NOW!
